The 32nd Annual San Francisco Free Folk Festival was held in a brand new building on the City College campus. Harsanari presented a 30-minute program on Saturday, and a give a one-hour beginning dance workshop on Sunday. The event was free and open to the public.

On August 25th & 26th, the Oakland Chinatown Chamber of Commerce (OCCC) presented its 20th Annual Chinatown StreetFest. In celebrating the Year of the Boar, the Chinatown StreetFest attracted thousands of people from all over the Bay Area to come savor the taste of Asia, and to experience the traditions that Oakland's Chinatown has so diligently preserved.

The two-day event ran from 10AM to 6PM and was free to the public. Consisting of more than 280 booths, the festival spanned nine to ten blocks of Chinatown. Every year small businesses and community organizations from all over California come to showcase a myriad of delicious foods, unique Asian products, and special services. There will be arts & crafts, entertainment on three stages, and a Cultural Village presented by the Oakland Museum of California.

Harsanari performed a 30-minute program on the Cutural Stage at Ninth and Webster Streets at 11:30 a.m. The program consisted of Blantek, Gatot Kaca, Kandagan, and Rantak.

On Friday, November 17, 2005 at the Ralston Hall Mansion, Notre Dame de Namur University, Belmont, CA, the Asian American Donor Pogram held its annual gala, featuring Asian performing artists, a dinner prepared by top Bay Area chefs, tea teasting, an online auction, a silent auction, and more, to benefit the Asian American Donor Program's projects to help save the lives of Asian patients with Leukemia, Lymphoma and other life-threatening blood diseases.

Harsanari donated their time by performing two items at this event.

2006 San Francisco Free Folk Festival

"For 30 years, the San Francisco Free Folk Festival has been a true grassroots effort. All performers, workshop leaders, sound technicians and event organizers volunteer their time, allowing this event to remain free. It takes more than 200 volunteers, including instructors and performers, to make this event an annual success.

"Of all the folk festivals, the San Francisco Free Folk Festival is unique. Visitors here may take part in playing instruments, crafts, dance and singing, in addition to the enjoyment of performances by leading lights of folk, new acoustic, blues and international music."

On Saturday, June 24, Michael taught an Indonesian dance workshop to over 30 students. Later that day, he taught a Hawaiian hula dance workshop to an extremely crowded class of over 50 students!

Gala Dinner and Relief Fundraiser

"On May 27, 2006 a devastating 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck central Java, Indonesia. More than 6,200 people have died, and many more are missing or injured. Over 65,000 homes have been destroyed, and tens of thousands of people are now left homeless and have little-if any-resources for food, water, and rebuilding.

"In response to the desperate need for assistance, former Yogyakarta residents Daniel Sudaryanto, chef at Betelnut Restaurant, and Amron Paul Yuwono, owner of Gecko Gecko Indonesian Art, held a Gala Dinner Earthquake Relief Fundraiser at Betelnut Fine Asian Cuisine Restaurant, 2030 Union Street, San Francisco 94123, on Monday, June 19, 2006 at 7:00 pm.

"Betelnut was closed to the public in order to host this fundraising event. Thirteen different dishes from Yogyakarta, Indonesia were served. Tickets for this event were priced at $150 per person. One hundred percent of the proceeds from this event were funneled through Save the Children (www.savethechildren.org) under their disaster program to aid victims of this Yogyakarta earthquake. All donations were tax deductible."

Performers at this event included: One People Voice, Gamelan Bamboo Bali, Gamelan Sekar Jaya, Dancer - Bulan Trisna, Kompiang, and Michael Ogi, who performed Gatot Kaca.

"Buddha's Light International Association, American Buddhist Cultural Society in San Francisco, American Buddhist Cultural Society in Fremont and Light of Buddha Temple in Oakland hosted a on May 14th, 2006 from 10:00am to 5:00pm at San Francisco's Civic Center Plaza. There were prayers of world peace and harmony, an offering ceremony, arts and crafts, vegetarian food, and entertainment."

As part of this event, Harsanari performed Gatot Kaca and Kembang Topeng.

Chefs without Borders
Benefit for the Tsunami Relief Fund

The Asian Chefs Association and San Francisco Hilton & Towers presented Chefs without Borders, an event to benefit the Tsunami Recovery Fund. The evening bag with a Premium Wine and Caviar Reception from 5 p.m.-7 p.m., followed by the Celebrity Chefs Tasting Reception from 6 p.m.-9 p.m. Entertainment for the evening will include dance groups from Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Philippines, China, and India. Participating restaurants include Ana Mandara, Anzu, Aqua, Azie, Gaylord India Restaurant, Ozumo, Pisces, The Ritz-Carlton San Francisco, Roy’s, Straits Café, Three Seasons, Tommy Toy’s Cuisine Chinoise and more! Participating wineries include Honig Vineyards & Winery, Sake World Imports and others. Ticket Prices are $200 for the Celebrity Chefs Tasting Reception and $350 for the VIP Reception, which includes the Premium Wine and Caviar Reception. Nearly 100% of donations will go towards the Tsunami Recovery efforts through Give2Asia.org and the Asia Foundation, which has over 50 years of experience working in Southeast Asia.

Tsunami Fundraiser

SAALT (South Asian American Leaders of Tomorrow), in association with Indonesian Professionals Association (IPA) and others, hosted a fundraiser to benefit the vicitims of the Tsunami disaster in Sri Lanka and Indonesia. Harsanari and Dholrhythms (a bhangra group) performed. There was a cash bar, henna artist, and DJ. All proceeds went to to the victims of the tsunami disaster in Indonesia and Sri Lanka through: Sri Lanka Foundation, Padi Nasunthara, and United Way - Tsunami Aid for Sri Lanka.

San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival Auditions

On Saturday, January 22, Harsanari performed two pieces at the San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival auditions at McKenna Theater on the San Francisco State University campus. The first item performed was Waledan, a jaipongan dance set to music that combines both Balinese and Sundanese elements. The second piece was Kembang Boled, a dance in the bajidoran style. The San Francisco Ethnic Dance festival is produced by World Arts West, an organization that has been presenting and promoting the dance and music traditions of the world for over twenty-five years.

Join Achmad Farmis and Harsanari (August 26–September 7 and September 16–September 30) as they guide you through the dances of Java and bring the ancient stories of the Ramayana and the Mahabarata to life. Examine the many dance gestures inspired by wayang golek (Javanese rod puppet theater), and view the puppets on view in the Hambrecht Gallery (through August 31; first floor) as well as in Gallery 11 (third floor). Create a headdress or mask like those worn by the various characters of wayang golek; transform yourself into an Indonesian dancer when trying on a sampur, sarong, or head scarf; or survey an Indonesian arts video while you relax in AsiaAlive’s multimedia lounge. From September 9 through 14 visitors may work with the contemporary Indonesian art collective Apotik Komik during their weeklong residency with AsiaAlive. This is a unique opportunity to create pieces such as comic books and cardboard cutouts under the guidance of these distinctive Indonesian artists. This month is co-presented by Harsanari Indonesian Dance Company and Intersection for the Arts.
