Waledan is a traditional song from a village named Waled, on the north coast of West Java. The music for the Waledan dance performed by Harsanari is a contemporary arrangement recorded in April 2000 by Sambasunda, a group of well known Sundanese musicians in Bandung, West Java as part of their world music series. The arrangement is unusual in that it incorporates elements of Balinese gamelan, traditionally performed for the (Hindu) gods, with the local Sundanese gamelan, which has a tradition of being created for the common (Muslim) people. While the rhythms and accompanying dance movements are Sundanese, many of the musical motifs are Balinese, as are the names the male singer recites at the beginning of the dance. The two contrasting styles form an intriguing blend that exemplifies the ongoing creative spirit of Sundanese art.
Waledan was choreographed in 2002 by Achmad Farmis, and is in the jaipongan style, a folk dance style from Bandung, West Java.
